If you are a fan of the superhero genre, then you might have heard about Amazon Prime’s new show, Invincible. It is a recent animated series that consists of 8 episodes ranging from 45 minutes to an hour long. And yet somehow, as a proud Binger, I was able to watch eight hours worth of episodes in one day.
I wish that I could say that I had heard about the show before its release, but truthfully, I was not the one to find the show. I had multiple people text me seeking my opinion on it, and when more than five people had asked for my thoughts, I knew it was time to cave.
When I first started the show I was hesitant, but the main character, Mark Grayson, was cute enough for me to continue watching. I am always one to read a story’s original iteration, but I forgot to look up the show’s origins before starting. Without knowing any of the characters or plotline, I was able to be surprised by every single episode. Although not every episode ended on a cliff-hanger, I finished each episode wanting more.
Let me give you a quick synopsis. The comic is set in the Image Universe, the fictional universe of most Image Comics (including Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy – read our review here), allowing readers to connect with different characters and follow their stories. Invincible is no different, and in this comic and TV show we interact with characters from other plotlines that exist within the Image Universe. The show follows Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old boy who keeps an important secret from those around him…His father, Nolan, is the most powerful superhero in the Image Universe, otherwise known as Omni-Man. In the show, we watch Mark transform from a skinny, nerdy high school student into the superhero his father always wanted him to be.
Part of what makes this show so unique is the different relationships forged between the characters. My personal favorite is between Mark Grayson, otherwise known as Invincible, and Samantha Eve Wilkins, his classmate/well-known superhero Atom Eve. In the show, Atom Eve is a badass superhero who can sense and manipulate matter and energy at the sub-atomic level by sheer willpower. Organic and inorganic matter can be changed into anything she desires. So, in a sense, her powers are limitless. Some day, she may rival Omni-Man!
Since the show focuses on Mark Grayson, who is in high school, there are many teenage characters. And while the majority of their problems are not all that relatable (given their superhuman nature), there are moments sprinkled throughout that allow the audience to connect with the characters. While I can never relate to Mark Grayson’s struggle with his father being a superhero, I can understand the struggles of being a high school student while pursuing my passions.
Another component of the show that is so enticing is the talent of the voice actors. The cast includes Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, Sandra Oh as Mark’s Mom (Omni-Man’s wife), and J. K. Simmons as the voice of Omni-Man. But the list of famous actors does not end there; Zachary Quinto, Jason Mantzoukas, Malese Jow, Zazie Beetz, and even Mark Hamill are part of this star-filled TV show.
In some exciting news, Amazon renewed the series for a second and third season, so we can continue to follow this journey. I cannot wait to see where this TV series will go next! I can not recommend this show enough, and I hope that after you read this article you will check out a trailer on BingeRoom and start watching Invincible. And if you love it as much as I do, make sure to recommend it to your friends!
